One of Simon Shaw’s neighbours heard a crunching sound outside her property at 9.15pm on January 22, High Peak Magistrates’ Court heard. She looked out of the window and saw Shaw trying to park his Ford Ranger in a garage space, prosecutor Jennifer Fitzgerald said.

She went to speak to him and noticed he smelt of alcohol and he also fell to the floor after getting out of the vehicle.

Police were called and when they arrived, Shaw had returned to his home at Glebe Park, Eyam, and barricaded himself in with tools including a petrol strimmer, Mrs Fitzgerald added. Officers forced entry and Shaw was arrested. At the police station, he provided a reading of 93 in breath, the legal limit is 35.

In interview, he said he had been out with friends to a pub in Calver and consumed two pints, but later admitted he had drunk more. The 55-year-old admitted drink-driving.

Brent Patterson, defending, said: “This gentleman suffers such severe depression that he needs his brother to organise his income and expenditure. He misjudged how much he had to drink. He wasn’t in a collision.”

He added that Shaw didn’t barricade himself in the property, but that the property was perhaps untidy.

He was fined £275 and banned him from driving for 24 months. He must pay a £27 surcharge and £85 costs.
