Firefighters mounted a rescue operation after a casualty fell into a river in New Mills.

Crews from New Mills, Buxton and Matlock were called to Wirksmoor Road at about 9.05pm last night.

A Derbyshire fire service spokesman said: “The incident involved a middle-aged casualty who had fallen 50m down a steep embankment and was rescued from a river.

“They were left in the care of paramedics.”

Police were also in attendance.
