Firefighters from Chesterfield, Hathersage and Buxton carried out the dramatic rescue operation at Ladybower Reservoir at about 6.30pm on Saturday.

The car had crashed down an embankment and was “very close” to the reservoir, a fire service spokesman said.

Firefighters were tasked with making sure the car did not plunge into the water while removing the vehicle’s roof to free the trapped woman.

The spokesman described it as a “complex extrication”.

The woman was eventually released. She is currently being treated in hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

It is not clear why the car left the road.

Crews left the scene, off the A57 Snake Pass, at about 8pm.
