Dozen mopeds targeted by Derbyshire thieves in three weeks

Police said the thefts all took place over the past three weeks, both in the day and overnight, in Long Eaton, Breaston, Sandiacre, Borrowash, Sawley, Kirk Hallam and Ilkeston.

Sergeant Damien Shannon, who is in charge of the teams, said: “The thefts have been happening right over the borough and at all times of day. We have increased our patrols both uniformed and plain-clothed in an attempt to stop and catch those responsible.

“We would ask for help from moped users by asking them to be extra careful in securing their bikes and the general public by being vigilant for this type of offence.”

Some simple tips have been issued to help avoid mopeds from being stolen:

· If you have a security device fitted, always use it. A wide variety of locks can be used, such as chains or padlocks, disc locks and D locks.

· If you have a garage or shed , make sure you use it. Don't leave your bike out for all to see, always put it away in the garage or shed as soon as you arrive home. Make sure your garage or shed is properly secure and alarmed if possible.

· Property mark bike parts with your postcode or registration number, using an ultra violet marker pen or property marking kit. Keep a record of the parts you’ve marked.

· Use tamper proof screws to secure your motorcycle number plate. They can be purchased on the internet or from local dealers. These screws will prevent number plates from being stolen which are used on stolen vehicles to commit crime.

· If you ride an off-road bike, ask the DVLA to register its details (frame and engine numbers) on their own and police computers - it's free.

If you are out and about on your bike:

· Think about where you park - try to park where there are lots of people passing, good lighting /visibility and CCTV.

· Try to use a designated motorcycle-parking place with a stand and security loop, as bikes are often ‘lifted’ onto another vehicle and stolen.

· Whenever possible, avoid leaving your helmet or other accessories on your motorbike or scooter or in a luggage space on panniers.
