Doorstep sellers told to leave Hathersage

The men were spotted by officers from Hathersage Safer Neighbourhood Team while they were on patrol in Crossland Road on Friday, August 30.

Police asked the men to produce their Pedlar’s Certificates, which door-to-door salesmen are required to have by law.

The men said they did not have certificates and were not aware that they needed them to peddle goods. They were told to leave the area by police and not to try selling items until they had the proper documentation.

PCSO Anthony Boswell, from Hathersage Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Door-to-door selling is fine if the salespeople have the proper certificates but if they don’t, the chances are they are not legitimate.

“I’d like to remind residents that, if a salesman knocks on their door, ask to see their Pedlar’s Certificate and if they don’t have one, don’t deal with them.

“Always make sure your home is secure, use a door chain and if you’re unsure about anything or think someone is acting suspiciously, call police.”

Pedlar’s Certificates are issued by police and are required under the Pedlar’s Act. They are a slip of paper with the Derbyshire Constabulary crest on, along with the details of the seller and a unique reference number.
