Doors to collegeofficially opened

The purpose-built campus on the site of the former magistrates’ court, on New Lawn Road, will play host to around 800 students on courses ranging from construction to hairdressing.

Student ambassador Edward Holwell, 19, of St Andrew’s Drive in the town, has just started studying childcare and education at the campus and is already singing the praises of the venue.

“The old building was cold, it was drafty and it was just starting to look a bit grubby and old — now it’s just a lot easier to focus because the classrooms are more comfortable to learn in,” he said.

And Rajdeep Kaur, 19, of Roper Avenue, Heanor, was there on the open day last Friday (January 31), which also saw the unveiling of the new hairdressing salon.

The childcare and education diploma student says the site will appeal to the increasing number of teens moving towards vocational-style courses.

She undertakes regular work experience at day nurseries as part of her diploma.

“You need knowledge, but you need to know the practise side as well,” said Rajdeep.

In a speech to the crowd, Derby College principal Mandie Stravino said the site will be “about making sure people are ready and prepared for the world of work.”

An official opening plaque was unveiled at the college by Ms Stravino and chairman of Derby College Janet Morgan.

The college’s former home on Field Road has been sold to developer St James Securities and work is set to start soon on a new retail store and petrol station for Morrisons as well as 39 new private and social housing homes.
