COUNCIL chiefs have been meeting with up to 30 potential developers today, July 21, to discuss multi-million pound proposals to develop a Northern Gateway shopping quarter for Chesterfield town centre.

Chesterfield Borough Council is seeking a developer to transform the Donut Roundabout area, off Holywell Street, with new shops, restaurants and offices to increase the amount people spend in the centre from about £231m to over £270m per year.

Council chief executive Huw Bowen said: “We want to improve the quality of our shopping offer and we’re trying to get more expenditure.

“We want to attract more premium retailers like Debenham’s, House of Frazer, Oasis and La Senza and want to attract a development partner to work with us.”

The council and developers met at borough council offices at the town hall, today, July 21, to discuss the plans and it is hoped a development partner with its own financial backing will soon join the council scheme and help attract retailers.
