Derbyshire to welcome world’s top cyclists for Friends Life Tour of Britain stage
Some of the world’s top cyclists will be heading to Derbyshire’s picturesque Peak District for this year’s Friends Life Tour of Britain.
Stage six of British Cycling’s premier road cycling event will run from Stoke-on-Trent to Nottingham on Friday September 11.
The 189-kilometre leg will take in Leek and the Staffordshire Moorlands, before passing through previous stage start venues Buxton and Bakewell, and on to Matlock and Belper, with the exact route through the Peak District subject to final confirmation from Derbyshire County Council.
Mick Bennett, Race Director of Friends Life Tour of Britain organisers SweetSpot, said: “Stage Six will not be an easy stage at all for the riders, and may well be the toughest of the entire 2015 Friends Life Tour of Britain.
“We have an exciting and very scenic route joining two cities both with a rich cycling heritage, which is sure to play a part in shaping the overall race for the Friends Life Yellow Jersey.”
Further stage details, including Ordnance Survey maps, will be announced in the summer, along with details of the 20 competing teams.
The 2015 Friends Life Tour of Britain will start in Wales for the first time in the modern race’s history, with Anglesey hosting the start of the opening stage to Wrexham on Sunday September 6, finishing eight days later in the heart of London with an iconic new circuit taking in many of the capital’s world famous sights.
ITV will screen three-hours of live coverage of every stage, starting on ITV for the opening Wales stage before reverting to ITV4 for Stages Two to Eight. ITV4 will also screen a one-hour highlights programme each evening during the race.
