Derbyshire’s night sky was lit up by a much bigger and brighter moon at the weekend.

The so-called supermoon was beautifully captured in the early hours of Sunday morning by Derbyshire Times reader Darren Watkinson.

He said: “I woke up about 2am and was a bit lucky as there was a short break in the cloud.”

The celestial phenomenon occurs when the moon reaches its closest point to earth.

The effect makes the moon seem 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter than when it is furthest from the planet.

Skywatchers who missed the supermoon will have to wait until August 2014 for the next one.
