Derbyshire region is set to honour the fallen during Remembrance Sunday

Events will be held around 11am, on Sunday, November 8, in advance of Armistice Day, on November 11, in villages and towns around north and mid Derbyshire and the Peak District.

The official Armistice Day marks the 11th hour of the 11th day, of the 11th month, which was the moment when peace was declared in 1918 after the First World War and it is recognised with nationwide Remembrance Sunday services on the second Sunday of November.

Councillor Sharon Blank, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for governance, said: “Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day are two of the most solemn dates in the calendar as Chesterfield meets to remember those who gave their lives in service to their country.”

Many have also been finding their own unique ways to honour the members of the armed forces and civilians who made the ultimate sacrifice in the First and Second world wars as well as later conflicts including Iraq and Afghanistan.

Clowne Parish Council has joined forces with Bolsover District Council artist Andrew Tebbs to design and build a new Garden of Remembrance which was officially opened with a dedication on October 28.

The garden, on Mill Street, boasts a poppy-inspired centre-piece designed for quiet contemplation and is an extension to the existing Cenotaph and War Memorial at The Green.

It was designed after Mr Tebbs spoke with the people in Clowne and it is hoped to become a space that people can use when they visit the Cenotaph or they can use it for Remembrance and other events.

The garden includes a well-lit, horse shoe-shaped, wall with seating and panels acknowledging those who contributed during war time.

It’s crowning feature is a sandstone monument with poppy carvings split into four parts with each representing petals.

Clowne Cenotaph bears the names of more than 100 servicemen who gave their lives during the two World Wars and around 800 people gather on Remembrance Sunday to commemorate those who died.

A Clowne Parish Council spokesman said: “Every year the people of Clowne get together to honour the fallen of two World Wars and to remember their sacrifice. The names of the fallen appear on the Cenotaph in the centre of the village. “Remembrance is not about glorifying war and is not about those attending the memorials. It is about remembering the sacrifice of those who gave their lives for us that we might never forget.”

Elsewhere, veteran and Royal British Legion Poppy fundraising co-ordinator David Wilson has also been fundraising at Tesco’s in Alfreton and Hollingwood Primary School pupils have been preparing to create poppies in the style of Chesterfield artist Paul Cummins’ Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red.

Chesterfield’s Marks and Spencer store arranged for Royal British Legion buglers Ken Trustwood and Mick Bridge to play on October 24 as they launched the Poppy Appeal. The annual Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal has once again raised thousands of pounds for war veterans and their families with the sale of poppies.

Alfreton Town FC will also be wearing a specially designed team kit adorned with poppies thanks to their official kit supplier UN1TUS which has custom-crafted the red poppy kit.

ATFC Chairman Wayne Bradley said: “The kit, provided at zero cost to ATFC by it’s kit partner UN1TUS, will be worn by its players with extreme pride, honour, respect and in remembrance of those to whom we all owe so much.”

Chesterfield

Chesterfield residents have the opportunity to gather and honour the fallen in events for Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.

The annual Remembrance Sunday service takes place on Sunday, November 8, at 2.30pm, at St Mary and All Saints’ Crooked Spire Church.

The service will be followed by a parade through the town centre and along Knifesmithgate to the War Memorial at Rose Hill, opposite the Town Hall.

Residents and visitors are welcome to watch the parade which will include: Chesterfield’s mayor and mayoress, the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and Derbyshire’s lord lieutenant, high sheriff as well as Chesterfield’s MP and representatives from Chesterfield Borough Council, Bolsover District Council, North East Derbyshire District Council and Staveley Town Council.

Members of the public are also welcome to attend the wreath laying ceremony at the war memorial from approximately 3.30pm.

There will be no service at 11am on Remembrance Sunday, November 8, due to the events taking place in the afternoon.

Members of the public are also invited to attend a Remembrance service organised by the Chesterfield branch of the Royal British Legion from 10.40am, on Armistice Day, Wednesday, November 11.

This will include the Last Post, a two-minute silence at 11am, and Reveille. More than 400 young people from schools and Chesterfield College will take part.

Dronfield

A parade for Remembrance Sunday, gathers around 10am to 10-15am, on November 8, from School Lane before progressing along High Street.

It will arrive at the Dronfield War memorial, in Library Gardens, on High Street, about 10.55am, for a wreath laying and two minutes of silence from 11am.

A service will also be held at St John the Baptist Church, from 11.25am.

Bolsover

A parade will take place for Remembrance Sunday, from 10.35am, from Bolsover Castle. It will move along High Street to Bolsover Parish Church and to Town End and Market Place to the Cenotaph. There will be wreath laying and a ceremony at the Cenotaph with two minutes of silence from 11am.

Clowne

Remembrance Sunday, on November 8, begins with a service at St John’s Church from 9.30am to 10.15am. A parade from the Salvation Army will take place from 10.45am. A service and wreath laying and Last Post will take place from 10.55am-11.05am

The Last Post will be played at 11am followed by two minutes of minutes silence.

Matlock

A Remembrance Sunday ceremony will be held on November 8 with a Pic Tor War Memorial Service at 11am, a Starkholmes War Memorial Service at 11.30 am. The Royal British Legion and Parade and Service will assemble in Edgefold Road, Matlock, at 2.30pm, with marching out at 2.45pm to Park Head. A further service at Hall Leys Park Head at 3pm.

The day’s events have been organised by Matlock Town Council and the Matlock and Darley Dale Sub-Branch of the Royal British Legion.

An Armistice Day ceremony will also be held at Hall Leys Park Head, Matlock at 11am, on Wednesday, November 11.

Alfreton

People can gather at Alfreton House, at Rodgers Lane car park, about 10.30am, on Remembrance Sunday, on November 8, before a parade marches towards the memorial on King Street. There will be wreath laying at the memorial followed by two minutes of silence from 11am. A service will also be held at St Martin’s Church.

Ripley

Ripley Village Remembrance Sunday Service will begin from 10am, on November 8, at Derby Road Co-op. A parade will depart promptly at 10:15am to arrive at All Saints Church, Ripley, at 10.35am, and this will be followed by a wreath laying ceremony and service.
