Derbyshire mum to do Ironman challenge for injured friend

A Derbyshire mum is to put herself through the ultimate endurance challenge for a charity which saved her friend.

Laura Pearson, 29, from South Normanton, is to compete in the Lanzarote Ironman race next month for the Derbyshire Air Ambulance.

The team of flying paramedics saved family friend Jason Swift’s life when he had a motorbike accident five years ago.

She said: “I have always been into fitness and sports - It started with running and then obstacle course racing.

“But after I ran the London Marathon last year I felt like I needed a new challenge.

“When I went with my family on holiday to Lanzarote I saw the Ironman event and I was so inspired. I felt I had to do this.”

Of all the challenges Laura has completed, this one will undoubtedly be her toughest.

The Lanzarote Ironman consists of a 3.8km sea swim followed by a 180km bike ride and a full marathon - and must be completed in just 17 hours.

On top of this, Laura will have to content with the island’s oppressive heat and a mountainous terrain.

Laura chose the Air Ambulance charity after it saved the life of her friend Jason Swift in 2012.

Jason was in a serious motorbike accident which led to him losing his arm and having a stroke.

“The Air Ambulance were called because he was unconscious,” explains Laura.

“They put him on life support at the scene, then he was taken to Queens Medical Centre and straight into life saving surgery,

“Without the Air Ambulance, Jay wouldn’t have got to the hospital in time to save his life.”

In recent years, Laura has competed in a ‘Coast to Coast’ triathlon in Scotland, a number of marathons and the 160km Derby Sportive bike ride.

Throughout all her long months of training, Laura says she is sustained by her partner Daniel and son, Harvey.

“They are absolutely fantastic they motivate and support me 100 per cent,” says Laura.

“I aim to inspire my son to do great things in life - I believe if you can imagine it you can achieve it.”
