Derbyshire on high alert for Friday morning rush-hour snow

The Met Office has this morning issued yellow ‘be aware’ alerts of snow and ice in the county between 12.10am and 10am tomorrow – and urged members of the public to take “extra care”.

A Met Office spokesman said: “The snow could be heavy on hills, giving five centimetres or so, but on lower ground temporary accumulations of up to two centimetres seem more likely.

“Following clearance at the end of the night, there is an increasing risk of ice forming on untreated surfaces.

“The public should be aware of the potential for hazardous driving conditions.”

A spokesman for Derbyshire County Council said: “We’ll grit primary routes in Peak District at midnight. Will keep eye on the weather through the night and do more if needed.”

A big chill has enveloped the county for the past ten days.
