DERBYSHIRE: Great start to badger appeal

Campaigners at Derbyshire Wildlife Trust are “delighted” after raising £22,500 in their badger appeal – in less than one month.

The trust, which is aiming to raise £50,000 to vaccinate Derbyshire badgers against bovine tuberculosis (TB), launched the appeal at the beginning of June. The money will pay for vaccines, licences, traps and other equipment, and for training vaccinators.

Tim Birch, the Trust’s Conservation Manager, said: “We are delighted and encouraged by this response. We’ve received lots of comments from people telling us that this is the sensible way forward and that they are proud to be supporting our work. We think it shows that people don’t support culling but do want to help find a solution to this dreadful disease.”

Along with other trusts around the country, Derbyshire Wildlife Trust supports badger vaccination as one of a series of measures to help prevent the disease – which is having a devastating impact on cattle farming as thousands of cattle being destroyed every year.

The appeal comes in the wake of the Coalition authorising trial badger culls in the South West of England.

If you would like to support the Trust’s badger vaccination work, you can send a cheque made payable to Derbyshire Wildlife Trust to Derbyshire Wildlife Trust Badger Appeal, East Mill, Bridge Foot, Belper, Derbyshire, DE56 1XH.
