Derbyshire folk are ‘least practical in the UK’, survey says

Results from a questionnaire of 2,000 people show just 40 per cent of locals are able to fit a new wheel, 31 per cent can’t unblock a toilet and only 34 per cent of residents can speak a foreign language.

The study – which was carried out by conference call provider Powwownow – claims 18 to 24-year-olds are least able to carry out basic practical skills like changing a burst tyre or unclogging a loo.

However, 40 per cent of the younger generation are able to master a new language – compared with just 31 per cent of people aged 55 and over.

According to the survey, Derbyshire women are the worst offenders for having a ‘can’t do’ attitude – while five per cent of blokes have admitted to pressing the snooze button on their alarm clock at least once every morning, rather than waking up and embracing the day ahead.

Explaining the reasons behind the results, leading psychotherapist Peter Gianfrancesco said: “In general, people are often negative and pessimistic.

“They can be be quick to think they can’t do something before actually trying to do it.

“Every time we think like this we reinforce our belief that we are not capable.

“With the right encouragement and mental attitude, anyone can develop a more positive and can do mindset.

“If the nation was to have a change of heart and believe in themselves and their abilities, a lot more would get done.”

Rob Gorby, marketing director for Powwownow, added: “Waking up with a positive attitude and energy is something the nation needs to work on because we can do anything we put our minds to.”
