Derbyshire firefighters continue to battle blaze at block of flats

Firefighters are continuing to deal with a blaze at a block of flats in Derbyshire.

Crews from a number of stations in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire were called to the major fire at Springfield Mill on Bridge Street, Sandiacre, shortly before 4.30pm on Tuesday.

A Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Work is continuing this morning with our emergency service colleagues as part of the multi-agency response to this incident.

“Currently one crew from Ascot Drive fire station is using the aerial ladder platform to damp down hot spots that continue to burn in the roof space and between the third and fourth floor of the building.

“Bridge Street remains closed while the incident is ongoing and members of the public are asked to avoid the area and also to adhere to current Government advice in respect of Coivd-19.

“Stay at home except for essential journeys and do not visit the scene of the fire.

“Local residents are reminded to keep their windows and doors closed due to the smoke.

“A joint fire investigation will commence later today.”

Maggie Throup, Erewash MP, said: “I am aware of the developing situation at Springfield Mill and have spoken to both the Chief fire officer and the relevant Government minister to ensure that help and support is being co-ordinated for those affected.

“I am being kept up to date with the situation on the ground and will be on hand to assist residents should they need my help over the coming days and weeks.”
