“We do this, or people drown,” that’s the stark explanation given by Derbyshire firefighter Brendan Woodhouse for why he took part in humanitarian efforts to save migrants risking their lives to cross the Mediterranean Sea.

His efforts hit the headlines last month when his rescue boat was refused entry to the Italian port of Catania after rescuing 47 people. Here he tells his story..
