Derbyshire family’s plea to fund Syrian refugee mission

A Matlock family who have already taken vital supplies to Syrian refugees are making a desperate appeal for donations to fund their next mission.

The Worsley family made a vow to help refugees after being shocked by the images of drowned children on the island of Kos, Greece, so launched the group Hope for Refugees.

The group began collecting donations from across Derbyshire earlier this year.

In October, Mum Liz, accompanied by Jackie Hughes and Richard Earl, drove two vans full of supplies to camps on the Greek and Macedonia border.

The group raised 4,000 to deliver the donations last time.

Now the group has collected another lorry load worth of supplies – but desperately needs cash so they can get them to where they are needed.

The group are also looking for anybody who may be able to loan them a small lorry for the trip, as they have calculated they could do the trip for £2.000 with one.

Liz, of Linden Grove, said: “We were supposed to be going out in December, but we have had to cancel the trip due to lack of funds.

“We have lots of essentials that people from across the county have donated generously – but we currently cannot deliver them.

“If anybody could spare even a few pounds it really would make a massive difference.”

She added: “With winter now upon us it is vital that we get these medical supplies, toiletries and winter clothing and shoes to people who need it.”
