Derbyshire Dales residents recycle nearly half of all waste

Recycling rates in the Derbyshire Dales have shown a dazzling increase since the introduction of a new collection service just seven months ago.

The percentage of household waste being re-used, composted or recycled is now nearing 50 per cent – which is above the authority’s target and an increase of more than 6 per cent on this time last year.

Now, in the month of Recycle Week 2013, Derbyshire Dales District Council and contractor Serco have sent their thanks to residents for sending less household waste than ever to landfill, contributing to a “greener” Dales.

A district council spokesperson said: “We are delighted the new service has now bedded in and we continue to encourage local people to recycle even more. It’s fair to say that if residents use all the options available to them, they should not now be generating general waste over and above what fits into their grey bin or the four black sacks limit at properties where wheeled bins can’t be used.

“For this reason, while we are always happy to collect extra recycling from homes, we do not take extra household waste.

Dales residents can call the waste helpline on 01629 761122 or email [email protected]. Useful advice is also available online at www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/waste, including a web video.

“The new service was introduced because local residents told us they wanted to recycle more and we want to thank the vast majority of households who are doing just that. Our aim now is to top the 50% recycling figure in the coming year.”
