Derbyshire County Council's new cabinet line-up announced

Derbyshire County Council has announced its new-look cabinet after the Conservatives regained control from the Labour Party last week.

The Tories gained 19 seats across the county including Chesterfield, Heanor, Ripley, Ilkeston and Buxton.

The Conservatives now hold 37 seats on the council, with Labour holding 24 and the Liberal Democrats holding three seats.

New council leader, Councillor Barry Lewis, said the new administration heralded a fresh start for the and that his team would start to implement their plans from day one.

The new cabinet line-up – to be confirmed at the council’s AGM on May 24 – is:

Councillor Linda Chilton is to become Derbyshire County Council’s chairman with Councillor George Wharmby selected as her vice-chairman.

Changes to be implemented include the discontinuation of the Improvement and Scrutiny Management Committee.

Councillor Lewis said: “We have put together a very strong team who will work hard to drive forward our key priorities.

“We’re starting work straight away on implementing our plans which include accelerating the work on fixing potholes to clear the backlog and abolishing the charges at household waste recycling centres.

“We are also putting a stop to plans to introduce parking charges in areas including Matlock Bath and will shortly be announcing a referendum in Chesterfield, giving people the opportunity to give their views on joining Sheffield City Region.

“We will reverse cuts to community transport to help support vulnerable people in isolated rural areas and will restart our innovative £30m care programme to provide new, modern care homes for the county’s older people.”
