Reports have been received of a dead wallaby in Chesterfield.

A man contacted the Derbyshire Times to say he was driving on the A61 on Wednesday morning when he was convinced he saw a dead wallaby in a lay-by near Tesco roundabout.

The Derbyshire Times wasn't able to find a wallaby's body at the scene.

Neither Derbyshire County Council nor Chesterfield Borough Council - which remove dead animals from roads - has any reports of a dead wallaby in the area.

On Tuesday it emerged a 2ft wallaby escaped from Filey Bird Garden and Animal Park in North Yorkshire - just hours after it arrived.

A population of wallabies was established in the Peak District around 1940 by five escapees from a local zoo. As of last September, sightings were still being made in the area.
