The newly refurbished minor injury unit at Whitworth Hospital, Darley Dale, opened to receive its first patients last week following months of work to bring the facilities up to standard.

General manager Jonathan Sanderson, said: “We are delighted with the brand new facilities which will enable us to give patients the care they need in a much better environment.

“It marks the end of two years of building work at the hospital during which time we have upgraded all the facilities in stages while also maintaining most of the regular patient care in temporary accommodation on the site.”

The brand new facilities were supported by Matlock Hospitals’ League of Friends with a donation in the region of £350,000 for the total refurbishment.

They include an improved reception and waiting area for the minor injury unit, with a purpose–designed children’s waiting room, and more treatment rooms for outpatients.

Last year the hospital’s Oker Ward and physiotherapy department were reopened following their complete redevelopment.

Mr Sanderson added: “It is a tribute to the staff who have juggled services around while the building work has been underway and we’d like to thank patients for bearing with us during the disruption.”

Matron Melissa Dalton, who looks after the minor injury unit, said: “Now we have fantastic new surroundings which will ensure patients coming to us receive their care in the most up–to–date facilities.

“It is a great local hospital for people in Darley Dale and Matlock, attracting patients from further afield as well.”

The minor injury unit is open 8am until 10pm seven days a week.
