Cyclist, 71, injured in lorry crash

AN ELDERLY man was hospitalised in a serious condition after the cyclist was involved in a collision with a lorry.

The 71-year-old, of Old Whittington, and a Scania HGV were in a crash on the A61 southbound between Whittington Road traffic island and Tesco traffic island at about 10.50am on Thursday.

He suffered broken bones and internal injuries and was taken to Chesterfield Royal Hospital. Police said he remained in a serious condition today (Friday February 18).

An investigation has commenced. Witnesses, or anybody with information, should call 0345 123 3333 quoting incident number 206.

Two more road crashes happened on Thursday night.

A pedestrian was hit by a Ford Focus on Holywell Street, Chesterfield, at 10.23pm and taken to Chesterfield Royal with injuries not thought to be threatening.

On the A61 Dronfield bypass at 10.39pm a Clio lost control then came off the A61 over a flyover and landed on Gosport Drive 22 ft below, crashing through 15ft of barrier.
