Despite the snail’s pace of the chase through Ilkeston, the pursuit still ended in a crash when the elderly driver, whose vision was almost totally obscured, hit a traffic island.

The ‘unbelievable’ drama was captured by officers who watched with disbelief as the motorist – seemingly oblivious to their presence – failed to pull over even after they switched on their flashing lights and siren last Thursday, January 7.

The video has racked up 8,000 views since being shared on Twitter by the Erewash Response team, who wrote: “Unbelievable situation last night.

"Elderly driver, windscreen totally frosted over allowing no view of the road ahead.

“A full referral has been submitted to the DVLA #OpRevoke #ProtectingVulnerableRoadUsers.”

You can hear the sense of disbelief growing in the officer’s voice as he describes the scene unfolding before him.

"It’s doing 3mph because its windscreen’s frosted up and it’s just nearly gone the wrong way around the roundabout so we’re going to try to stop it,” he says.

The Toyota Yaris is seen briefly mounting the kerb on Granby Street before the officer adds: “World’s slowest fail to stop going on. 2mph. Continuation towards Cotmanhay Road.”

The car eventually comes to a stop after hitting a traffic island as the driver turns into Cotmanhay Road, only for the motorist to attempt to reverse into the police car as another police vehicle pulls alongside.

Commenting on Twitter, one viewer jokingly described the footage as ‘like a scene from GTA’, while another wrote ‘full credit to the cop for not laughing’.

But others pointed out that the consequences could easily have been much more serious.

"It’s funny because they didn’t hit a child... glad they were caught and referred on for safety’s sake,” said one person.

Another wrote: “I don't understand how these people can't see how dangerous they are. Too stubborn to give up driving, putting other people at risk (clearly not on this occasion, but you get my meaning), plus why wasn't she at home?”
