Violent patient bit support worker on the back

A violent patient who bit a support worker on the back at a complex care unit near Mansfield has been detained there on a hospital order.

Lewis Jones launched his attack at The Manor, on Long Lane, Shirebrook, prosecutor Eddie Leonard told Derby Crown Court, on Wednesday.

"He caused significant bruising to the worker’s shoulder which took four days to heal," Ms Leonard said.

"He was aggressive towards other members of staff. He had to be restrained.”

The court heard that Jones, who has three previous convictions for seven offences of assault and battery, was a “vulnerable patient” with a complex mental disorder.”

He has been diagnosed with mild learning difficulties, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and emotionally unstable personality disorder.

He has been in secure care since the age of 13, and staff "struggled to manage his challenging behaviour."

The court heard there has recently been “an increase in his verbal and physical aggression," “concerns about his risk to fellow patients,” and that Jones "lacks insight into his behaviour."

Jones, 23, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Judge Shaun Smith QC, who heard reports from two psychiatrists, made a hospital order for Jones to be detained at The Manor.

He said he was satisfied that "the defendant is suffering from a mental disorder of a nature and degree that makes it appropriate for him to be detained in hospital for treatment."

"The risk of harm to the general public is high," he said. "It would be a very brave, and indeed rash, judge who goes against the opinion of the medics who are seeing this young man."
