Thug jailed after punching and strangling a policewoman in Derbyshire town

An Ilkeston man has been sentenced to 26 weeks in prison after pleading guilty to assaulting an emergency worker by beating.

Robert Wilsher launched an attack on a policewoman who was responding to a 999 call about a disturbance at a house, a court heard.

Police received a call at 6.30pm on Wednesday September 9 to reports of a disturbance at a house in Critchley Street, Ilkeston.

When the officer arrived at the scene, Wilshere 28, answered the door and she entered the house.

She believed Wilshere had committed an assault on a member of the public and told told him he was being arrested.

Wilshere then became violent, pulling the officer to the ground, punching and strangling her.

He pulled her radio from her uniform and threw it, leaving the officer unable to call for help. She eventually managed to reach her radio and press the emergency button. Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Wilshere of Boweswell Road, Ilkeston, was sentenced at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Friday September 11.

The officer received medical treatment and as is being supported by her colleagues.

Chief Superintendent Dave Cox described the attack as ‘despicable’.

He said: : “She was understandably left shaken by what happened but she is determined to move on and continue in her role to serve the public of Derbyshire.

“I am very proud of her and the commitment she has shown.

He added: “Attacks on emergency workers are simply unacceptable and I hope this sentence reflects that.”
