The 24-year-old plunged a knife into Mr Averill, 30, as he slept in the house he lodged at with Genovese on Charlotte Street. He had already stabbed his friend Jason Goodacre as he slept on the sofa. He survived and Genovese pleaded guilty to his attempted murder.

Genovese was sentenced today at Nottingham Crown Court. He will receive hospital treatment for his mental health problems, which his defence said led him to kill, before serving his sentence.

Speaking afterwards his family said they were satisfied with the outcome. His sister Claire said they could now start to deal with their grief.
