The chairman of Chesterfield Junior Blues FC has condemned ‘mindless’ vandals who damaged turf on the grounds at Eckington School this week, ruining the pitches for match days.

Tim Bedford said: “To the mindless individuals who think that riding motorbikes and quads on the Eckington school fields is a good idea.

“You have not only impacted our club and hundreds of players not being able to play football, building their fitness, their confidence, their social responsibility, you have also prevented the school from using the playing fields for the pupils to deliver the school curriculum in PE.”

The damage is thought to have happened some time yesterday.

Mr Bedford who runs the teams aged from under 11 to 17 plus added: “We were told by the school this morning that someone had ruined the pitch.

“We had three games planned for this Sunday which will have to be rearranged. It has made things very difficult for us as there is a chronic shortage of all weather pitches in Chestrfield and alternative pitches at Springwell are already becoming worn out from use.

“We are looking for alternatives but we don’t want parents to have to travel too far. It is just mindless idiots who don’t realise what impact they are having.

“I hope someone can identify those responsible as the school would love to speak to them.”
