Police are urging residents and businesses to be alert after fuel thefts from vehicles in the Chesterfield area.

Diesel was stolen from a lorry and a tractor parked in the yard of a business on Newbridge Lane, Old Whittington at around 8.10pm on Sunday January 5.

Around 70 gallons of fuel was also taken from two cranes parked in a compound off Sheepbridge Lane, sometime between Saturday, December 28 and Sunday, January 5.

People are advised to park in a secure garage or driveway where possible, or in a busy, well lit area and to report any suspicious activity to the police.

Other crime prevention advice for drivers includes:

Always try and park in areas monitored by CCTV.

Try and avoid parking up vehicles with full fuel tanks overnight.

Consider installing a security device which is fitted to the filler cap and activates the vehicle’s alarm when tampered with.

When parking in a lorry park, try to park very close to the next lorry so the fuel tanks are difficult to access.

Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information should contact Derbyshire police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
