Four thieves raided the bicycle rack at Chesterfield train station after they had a day out in the town.

Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Thursday, November 28, how James King, Thomas James, Darren James and Chelsea Mallin stole two bikes but were spotted by police on the train platform.

Police said King was aggressive with an officer before being grappled to the ground.

King, 22, of Sweet Lane, Wadworth, Doncaster, pleaded guilty to theft and was found guilty of another theft and assaulting a PC after a trial. Thomas James, 23, of Mill Street, Armthorpe, Doncaster, admitted a theft and was found guilty of another theft. Darren James, 21, and Mallin, 19, both of Mill Street, were both found guilty of two thefts.

Tim Williamson, defending, said Mallin had only been a look-out, Darren James is trying to turn over a new leaf and Thomas James would benefit from alcohol treatment. Jason Newall, defending King, said an injured officer only suffered minor injuries. King was sentenced to 26 weeks’ custody, Thomas James to 26 weeks suspended for 12 months with a curfew and Darren James got 26 weeks suspended for 12 months with 80 hours’ unpaid work. Mallin got a six month community order, 40 hours’ unpaid work and a curfew. Thomas and Darren James and Mallin also have to pay costs.
