Police officer charged with assaulting football fan before Chesterfield cup game

A police officer is due to appear in court today charged with assaulting a football fan before a Chesterfield FC game.

PC Liam Stewart was investigated following an incident that took place on August 8 2017 in Sheffield, which resulted in an 18-year-old man being treated at hospital for facial injuries.

The man had come into contact with the police and was subsequently arrested before the Sheffield Wednesday versus Chesterfield League Cup fixture that evening.

The case was investigated by the Independent Office for Police Conduct, who referred their findings and evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service.

PC Stewart, of South Yorkshire Police, was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and will appear at Barnsley Magistrates Court today (Wednesday).

South Yorkshire Police also found that he has a case to answer for gross misconduct. A hearing date has not yet been confirmed.
