Two men have admitted attempting to burgle New Mills sweet factory Swizzels Matlow.
Alan and Kyle Meighan pleaded guilty to entering a storage facility, off Albion Road, as trespassers with the intent to steal on January 26.
High Peak Magistrates’ Court heard on Monday that at about 7pm, a security guard notified the police that two men had entered the yard and acting suspicious.
Alan, 39, was seen on CCTV damaging a padlock and entering the building with Kyle, 21.
Prosecutor Jennifer Fitzgerald told magistrates that both defendants, of Chancel Avenue, Salford, had criminal records. The former was sentenced to 32 weeks in prison for burglary in 2012 and the latter was given a community order in 2011 for attempted burglary.
Duncan Phillips, defending, said: “This was a room where nothing was taken and negligible damage was done. They rummaged in a skip. This wasn’t a planned burglary; they were both in the area seeing family. They thought there might be some scrap in it, went to have a look in the other building but it was just old machinery, nothing which was of any use or value to them.”
The pair will be sentenced on March 31.
