Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit said the motorist was involved in a minor single-car collision before being stopped by officers a short distance away from Chesterfield Police Station on Lordsmill Street, close to Thai Thai and the Stuffed Olive Restaurant.

The driver – who was travelling in a silver Volkswagen Polo MK4 – was still trying to drive away when officers arrived. They tested positive for cocaine at the scene, police added.

The motorist then fell asleep during a Field Impairment Test before being arrested. As is procedure, a blood sample was obtained at a police station after the test was failed.

Field Impairment Tests are used by the police to check drivers for impairment through intoxication. They include asking drivers to walk along a straight line, stepping heel to toe, and a one-leg stand test.
