Man dies in serious Shirebrook fire behind leisure centre

A man is confirmed to have died after a blaze broke out in behind a leisure centre in Shirebrook this afternoon (January 27).

Derbyshire Constabulary were called at around 1.10pm today following reports that an open fire had started on land behind the Shirebrook Leisure Centre on Park Road.

The body of a man was found at the scene of the blaze and an investigation has been opened to determine the cause of the blaze.

It follows a large police presence in the Shirebrook area throughout the day and into this evening.

Officers currently believe the fire is an isolated incident.

In a statement, Derbyshire Constabulary said: “We would like to reassure the community that we believe this to be an isolated incident.

"Although we know the nature of the incident will be distressing for the people of Shirebrook, we do not believe there is any reason for people to be further alarmed.”

The force are urging residents who were in the leisure centre area between 12.30pm and 1.15pm today to get in touch with them as soon as possible, by calling 101 and quoting

reference 454 of 27 January.
