An inquest into the death of a man whose body was found in a field after he escaped from a nursing home has been opened and adjourned.

Kevin Herbert, 58, left Brookview Nursing Home, in Holmley Lane, Dronfield, overnight on Wednesday, January 22 and was reported missing a short time later, prompting a major search.

Speaking at Chesterfield Coroners Court this morning (January 28), Det Insp Gemma Booth from Derbyshire Police, said: “On January 25, shortly after 2pm a report was received that a body had been found in an open field at the rear of Boundary Academy on Jordanthorpe Parkway.”

She said that a member of the public found his body at the Coal Aston site, near to the border with Sheffield.

The hearing heard how Mr Herbert was seen on CCTV leaving the nursing home – which was not a secure facility – through the fire exit, after being admitted for respite care on December 30.

A post-mortem to determine the cause of death is yet to take place.

Assistant Coroner, Nigel Anderson adjourned the hearing to a date to be set.
