Jason Shipley's girlfriend was "sickened" to discover "hundreds of pictures of young children, aged between two to nine," some of whom were being raped, on his tablet, prosecutor Andrew Smith said.

She also found two pairs of knickers, for girls aged seven to eight-years-old, which were torn at the crotch, Sheffield Crown Court heard on Friday.

Shipley claimed they were just his attempt to be "kinky," but the woman, who had been going out with him for five months, "didn't accept his explanation and knew something was seriously wrong."

When police arrested Shipley on February 17, last year, they checked his computer and phones, and found a video of him performing a sex act while wearing childrens' underwear.

Ten Category A images, 58 Category B images and 728 Category C images, where "A" is the most extreme, were recovered, along with four bestiality images and 202 prohibited computer-generated images of "simulated" sex acts,

The court heard he has eight previous convictions and was jailed for 12 months in 2017 for a violent offence.

Tim Gaubert, mitigating, said: "There is very little that can be said in mitigation."

A pre-sentence report assessed Shipley, who had an "extremely troubled upbringing," as a serious risk to children.

He said Shipley was a "damaged individual" who took drugs to blot out his "pain and shame."

"He is now at rock-bottom and is in a position to accept intervention," Mr Gaubert said.

Shipley, 27, of Hartley Brook Road, pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent photographs of children, possessing extreme and prohibited images, and theft.

Judge Graham Reeds QC told Shipley, who appeared via video-link from HMP Doncaster wearing two crosses around his neck, that his mitigation could only take him so far.

He jailed him for a total of two years.

A Sexual Harm Prevention Order was imposed for ten years and he was put on the Sex Offenders Register for the same period.
