A man who punched a woman after a row about his son is due to be sentenced.
Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Monday, December 1, how Gary Nicholson, 55, of Coniston Road, Dronfield Woodhouse, assaulted Sandra Nicholson.
Prosecuting solicitor Becky Allsop said: “This is a domestic violence case where the victim Sandra Nicholson was regarded as a medium risk victim.
“She describes that there has been previous violence that has gone unreported.
“On the night of the incident there was bad news in the family in terms of a family dog that was not thought to be around for much longer.
“Mr Nicholson was in drink and angry that his son had been to their house.
“After his son left, he said to Sandra Nicholson, ‘what do you not understand about not inviting anyone around?’, and he punched her with both fists.”
Nicholson had originally been scheduled to be dealt with by a trial but he opted to enter a guilty plea to the assault which happened on July 21.
Defence solicitor Joe Harvey said: “There is a history of mental health issues with Mr Nicholson and these are highly relevant and it’s important that there is a pre-sentence report.”
Magistrates adjourned the case until December 17 to consider a probation report before sentencing. They requested a full probation report because the case involved domestic violence and stressed Nicholson’s mental health issues should be considered.
