Driver sentenced over supercar crash in Sheffield is millionaire Derbyshire car dealer

A driver who was sentenced over a supercar crash in Sheffield, which wrote off vehicles reportedly worth a combined £230,000, is a millionaire car dealer from Derbyshire.

A grey Ferrari 458 Spider and a red Porsche 118 Cayman GTS smashed into each other at Tinsley roundabout on May 20, 2018.

Witnesses reported seeing the cars exhibiting ‘racing style’ behaviour across South Yorkshire in the lead up to the collision, and tests showed the Ferrari had been doing 68mph on a 50mph road.

The Ferrari driver, 32-year-old Carl Hartley from Swadlincote, Derbyshire, and the driver of the Porsche, Henry Hibbs, 27, from Middlefield, New Ollerton, Nottinghamshire, were both convicted of dangerous driving and at Sheffield Crown Court yesterday, Wednesday, January 15, were given suspended prison sentences.

Hartley – who admitted the charge and was sentenced to nine months in prison, suspended for 24 months – is the son of Tom Hartley, who founded the luxury car dealership bearing his name in Swadlincote.

Carl Hartley featured in 32nd place on the Sunday Times Rich List in 2018, when his personal fortune was estimated at £23 million.

South Yorkshire Police told how he fled the scene following the crash but later identified himself as being involved in the collision.

The force said he claimed the brakes on his vehicle had failed, causing him to collide, but an investigation found no evidence of damage to the braking system.

As well as the suspended sentence, he was ordered to carry out 200 hours unpaid work, disqualified from driving for two years and ordered to pay £1,400 in costs.
