Staff at pubs, clubs and off licences in Derbyshire are being offered the chance to work towards a qualification in responsible alcohol sales.

Derbyshire Police are putting on a free course that will allow people who work within the licensing trade to study for the new qualification.

Staff at businesses across Chesterfield, Bolsover, North East Derbyshire and the Amber Valley will be given the oportunity to gain the BIIAB Level 1 Award.

A one day course, the qualification covers responsibilities associated with the retail sale of alcohol and the duties around under age sales and serving people who are drunk.

By completing a multiple choice exam at the end, staff will then be able to gain an industry recognised qualification which proves they understand the main points of licensing law.

PC Daryl Robotham, Licencing Officer for the area, said: “As well as carrying out checks and test purchase operations to ensure staff are keeping within the licensing laws, it is also important to us to work with premises to offer training and support to licensing staff around their responsibilities.

“The course is open to people who work in pubs, clubs and off licences and will provide them with an industry recognised qualification which will allow them to support the designated premises supervisor to sell alcohol responsibly on their premises.”

BIIAB is the wholly-owned awarding organisation of BII, the professional body for the licensed retail industry. BIIAB’s parent company, BII, is a registered charity whose remit is to raise professional standards across the licensing sector.

PC Robotham added: “By increasing knowledge and awareness of responsible alcohol sales and supporting licensees we also hope to have a positive impact within our communities, by helping to reduce and prevent incidents of alcohol related anti-social behaviour and crime.”

A number of dates for the course have been set starting at the end of October and in to November.
