Derbyshire man kicked woman in face and left her sprawling on the floor in New Year's Eve bar altercation

A Derbyshire man pushed a woman outside a pub before kicking her in the face in a New Year’s Eve altercation, a court heard.

Witnesses described how Joseph William Hunt assaulted the woman shortly before midnight on December 31 last year as he left the Association bar in Ripley.

Hunt, 23, of Lathkill Drive, Marehay, Ripley, admitted the assault when he appeared before Chesterfield Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, September 1.

Prosecuting, Robert Carr said that a witness had heard shouting as he left the building and witnessed the attack, which left the woman sprawled on the floor.

He said: “The witness told police that he went outside with his girlfriend at around 11.50pm - he remembers the time because he almost missed the countdown. He heard a lot of shouting and then he saw the defendant push the woman. He then spun around with his feet and kicked her in the face and she fell to the floor.

“He told police that he had not seen what had led up to the incident and he saw the defendant walking off into another pub. He thought about chasing after him but decided not to because he didn’t want to be assaulted himself.”

Hunt was identified by the manager of the bar who knew him from the location when CCTV footage was played back.

Mitigating, David Gittins told the court that Hunt had very little recollection of the incident.

Hunt was given a 12-month community order to include 80 hours of unpaid work. He must also pay £85 costs and a £90 victim surcharge.
