Police in Chesterfield are promising a crackdown on suspected use of legal highs and anti-social behaviour in the town centre.

It follows concerns about groups around the town centre and the Church of St Mary and All Saints on Rykneld Square.

Officers from the Chesterfield Safer Neighbourhood Team will be stepping up patrols around the area and talking to people suspected to be engaging in such behaviour.

The mobile police station will also be used to deter and monitor the issue.

PCSO John Lockwood from the Chesterfield Town Centre Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “We have received a number of reports of anti-social behaviour in the town, especially around the area of the crooked spire church.

“This is a treasured landmark in our town which is being shadowed by groups acting anti-socially and leaving litter discarded in the area.

“We will be carrying out increased patrols in the area to speak to those responsible and deter others from acting the same.”
