A booze-fuelled lout who smashed a pizza shop window in Staveley with a half-brick said he was so drunk he could not remember committing the offence.

Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Monday how Gareth Grainger, 25, of Carpenter Avenue, Mastin Moor, Chesterfield, had been drinking when he was caught on CCTV hurling a half-brick through the window of the Star Pizza Shop, on High Street.

Becky Allsop, prosecuting, said a witness saw a man carrying a half-brick and CCTV showed Grainger throwing something and causing the window to smash.

Grainger told police he had been drinking and could not remember the incident in July. He pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage.

Magistrates sentenced him to a six month community order with an alcohol activity requirement and ordered him to pay £664 compensation, a £60 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
