Council hunts down benefit fraudster

COURT: Court Case
COURT: Court Case

A former South Normanton man recently appeared at Chesterfield magistrates’ court charged with failing to declare his employment while claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance, housing benefit and council tax benefit.

Martin Pettifer, 49, formerly of Alfred Street, South Normanton, admitted wrongly claiming over £3,300 in benefits between December 2011 and May 2012 to which he knew he was not entitled and admitted failing to inform the authorities about his circumstances. He was given a conditional discharge, ordered to pay £100 costs and also told to repay the amounts he wrongly claimed. The conviction followed another successful benefit investigation by Bolsover District Council and The Department for Work and Pensions.

Bolsover District Cllr Rose Bowler said: “This is the third such case in as many weeks and shows we are committed to catching people who commit benefit fraud.”
