Police are treating a fire at a north Derbyshire pub as suspected arson.

The Rykneld Turnpyke, in John Street, Clay Cross, remains closed following the blaze in the early hours of the morning on Wednesday, June 25.

The pub is part of the Instant Karma Brewing Company. A statement on the firm’s Facebook page said: “The Rykneld Turnpyke was subject to a cowardly arson attack and will remain closed while a refit is under way.”

The statement added the pub would return “bigger and better than ever”.

Firefighters from Clay Cross and Chesterfield were called to the blaze at about 5.30am.

It is believed the fire had been burning since 3.30am.

A spokesman for Derbyshire police said: “It looks like there was a fire at the side of a rear door and an accelerant was used.

“We believe it was started deliberately and we’re appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact Derbyshire police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

The pub was developed at the former Egstow Family Club, which was gutted by a blaze in December 2010.
