Chesterfield woman punched former partner after she saw him walking through town with his new girlfriend

A Chesterfield woman punched her former partner outside a town centre pub when she saw him walking with his new girlfriend, a court heard.

Janine Martin punched the man outside the Victoria pub, in Knifesmithgate, on July 27 last year, Chesterfield Magistrates’ Court heard on Thursday, July 16.

Martin, 30, of Danby Avenue, Old Whittington, had initially denied the offence but changed her plea when she appeared before the court.

Prosecuting, Michael Little told the court that Martin, who had been drunk at the time, approached the couple as they were nearing the pub.

The male had sped up to try to avoid a confrontation but Martin started arguing with the other woman, and when a bouncer came to intervene she had reached around him, punching her ex in the head.

Mitigating, Denny Lau said: “This was a single blow, it was an isolated incident and there’s been no problems since.

Sentencing Martin to a 12-month conditional discharge, District Judge Jonathan Taaffe said: “I suspect that what I have been told today is the tip of the iceberg with your relationship with [this man].

“There’s no excuse for behaving in this manner, but it is now 12 months ago and I will take the very unusual step of issuing a conditional discharge, but I would not like this to be seen as a green light for excessive town centre drinking.”

Martin was also ordered to pay £85 costs, a £32 victim surcharge and compensation to her former partner.
