Anthony Steven Britland had been out drinking with friends prior to the incident, and had agreed to meet his partner later in the evening, who had also been out drinking with friends, Chesterfield Magistrates’ Court was told on Tuesday, July 28.
But when the two parties met up at a pub in Market Street, Clay Cross, on January 17, an altercation broke out between the two and the woman tried to leave the pub when Britland, 29, of Stollard Street, Clay Cross, smashed the glass into her face causing several deep cuts, bruising and a black eye.

She felt the flow and people were saying ‘don’t open your eyes’ because they thought she might have glass in them, and there was blood all over her face.”
Mitigating, Denny Lau said: “There’s a slight dispute about how the incident started. He says that she assaulted him and he reacted wrongly by using the glass. He was angry because he thought she had been looking at other men in the pub.”
Britland admitted causing grievous bodily harm and will be sentenced at Derby Crown Court on August 18, due to the severity of the offence.
