A BOOZY dad assaulted a police officer after his cousin refused to hand over his car keys, Chesterfield magistrates heard.

Police were called to Kendal Road, Newbold, after midnight on June 19 and Scott Stacey was outside the property.

He told officers his cousin would not give him the keys to his car. Police said he could fetch the keys later and offered him a lift home but he refused, saying he wanted to sleep in the car.

“Police were reluctant to let him do that,” said Helen Griffiths, prosecuting. “He pulled away and tried to punch an officer in the face.” Stacey (20) of Sheffield Road, Unstone, admitted assault. and was fined £160, with £85 costs, and was ordered to pay £50 compensation. Gavin Haigh, for Stacey, said:“He wishes to apologise to the officer. He did not intend to assault him.” Presiding magistrate Grant Stothart said: “Be an example to your son. He doesn’t want a dad who goes around punching coppers.”
