The 38-year-old, of Sett Close, admitted assault by beating at an earlier hearing but the case had been adjourned until last Wednesday for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

John Richards, defending, said: “This is clearly aggravated by the fact it is in a domestic violence setting.

“He saw her in Sainsbury’s and confronted her. Unfortunately he lost his temper when she walked away and pushed her on the back. She stumbled but fortunately didn’t fall over.

“His actions were out of character.”

Thorpe was given a 12-month community order, with 12-months supervision and a requirement to attend a building better relations programme. He must also pay costs of £85 and a surcharge of £60.
