Cricket player injured in crash which killed his dad is released from hospital

Wicketkeeper Tom Poynton, 24, and his father, Keith, 57, both of Swadlincote, were travelling in a red Ferrari when it left Caldwell Road, Linton, and hit a tree at about 8pm on Friday.

Tom was taken to hospital with various injuries but his father sadly died.

Simon Storey, chief executive at the cricket club, tonight said: “We are relieved that Tom is now at home with his family and friends.

“We will continue to do everything we can to support him in his rehabilitation, but the priority remains for now on supporting Tom and his family as they come to terms with the loss of Keith.

“The squad will return to the 3aaa County Ground tomorrow with the full support of the family. There is a shared sense of loss across the entire club which we will face together.

“On behalf of the entire club, I would like to put on record our sincere gratitude to all the messages of support we have received at this difficult time.”

A spokesman for the club added: “Tom is being supported by our doctor and physiotherapist who are treating the injuries sustained to his lower limbs in the accident.

“Further investigations will be undertaken by the club’s medical team tomorrow to ensure everything is in place to support Tom’s rehabilitation.

“The Poynton family would like to formally extend their deep gratitude for the words of tribute and support that have been extended to them in the last 24 hours.”

The club’s LV County Championship Division Two game in Leicestershire, which was due to take place today, was postponed.

The fixture has been provisionally rescheduled to take place on Sunday, June 8 to Wednesday, June 11.

The second XI friendly fixture between Derbyshire and Leicestershire, which was due to start at the 3aaa County Ground tomorrow, has also been postponed and will be moved to a date to be agreed.
