Crich Parish Council spend a penny on toilets

Visitors to Crich will no longer have to make for the bushes to spend a penny as the parish council has reopened the village’s public toilets.

The facility was closed by Amber Valley Borough Council last year as part of the authority’s cost-cutting measures.

Businesses in the borough, including pubs and restaurants, were offered £600 a year to open their toilets to the public – but no businesses in Crich decided to take it.

Clive Ludlam, clerk for Crich Parish Council, said: “The council felt that a civilised society needs public toilets.

“We get a lot of visitors to our village and we wanted to make sure they had a toilet to use. It would be a great shame if people did not visit Crich – just because there aren’t any public loos!”

Crich Parish Council will not get any extra funds to meet the costs of running the toilets and will have to cover the cost of insurance, cleaning, rates, water rates and maintenance.

“But that’s what we get our precept for,” said Clive. “We are happy that our public toilets are back up and running again.”

The toilets were officially reopened on Wednesday, April 3.
