Crews from Matlock and Hathersage were called to the fire at Coombs Farm, Coombs Road, at about 3.30pm on Saturday.

Straw and bales of silage went up in flames and the Environment Agency attended the scene as there were fears animal feed may have polluted a nearby pond containing fish.

Paul Reeves, of the Enviornment Agency, said: “It was a scene of devastation.

“Not much remains of the barn.”

He added: “While great for animal feed, silage contains polluting liquor which can be devastating to the water.

“We will continue to monitor water quality in the pond and assess risks to fish over the next few days.”

It is not clear what caused the fire.

There were no reports of any injuries.
